Over the years, I’ve had plenty of opportunity to observe Russ Shewchuk’s leadership from my role representing workers at Hudbay Minerals through Local 1405. Operating a federally regulated jobsite means our industry comes with its own unique set of pressures, complex labor dynamics, and high stakes. In that kind of environment, you quickly learn who has the backbone and practical sense to actually deliver for working people, and Russ has consistently proven he is that kind of leader.
What stands out most is that there has never been a leader in the IBEW who has achieved this level of success working directly with government. Look at his landmark work with Prime Minister Mark Carney—standing shoulder-to-shoulder to secure massive infrastructure initiatives, shape the National Electricity Strategy, and ensure that skilled union trades are at the table for the country’s biggest energy decisions. On a personal level, I am also extremely happy with the level of service and support we get from the First District; they always find the answers and have our back when we need it. Russ handles these heavy responsibilities with a level head, a straight-shooting approach, and unwavering integrity, always keeping his focus squarely on the best interests of the members.
Because of his proven track record and the doors he has opened at the highest levels, it would be an absolute shame to see this momentum disappear. Effective representation requires strength, vision, and a steady hand, and Russ checks every single box. I am proud to support him, knowing he will always protect and advance the future of working people the right way.
